Why the plates were not as big and heavy as most people believe?

Answer:

With the brevity of Reformed Egyptian, six inches of plates were not necessary.  Six inches of gold plates would be the equivalent of over 600 plates, 1,200 sides.  With that many plates, Mormon and Moroni could have written the whole record in Hebrew, which they would have preferred to do.  (See Mormon 9:33)
