Answer:

Helaman tells us that a large segment of the People of Ammon went into the land northward hundreds of years before the battle of Cumorah.  A careful reading of Moroni 7:1-4 implies that Mormon was preaching to these people who had experienced, "a peaceful walk with the children of men."
